Start Smart Texas is a partnership of United Ways of Texas and Texas PBS, created to support Texas communities that are part of the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, as well as other Texas cities, to achieve improved reading scores across the state. Community Action Inc. of Central Texas proudly serves as the anchor organization for Start Smart Hays & Caldwell (SSHC).

SSHC is an early childhood coalition that brings providers, stakeholders, & parents together with the purpose of increasing the effectiveness of existing early childhood systems, and ultimately improving kindergarten readiness in our communities.

Our mission is to Promote kindergarten readiness, family engagement, and community health & wellness through collaborative planning and family empowerment. SSHC aims to further this mission through:

  • Targeted advocacy & education to community groups
  • Promoting the importance of early screenings
  • Expanding evidence-based approaches of engaging parents & caregivers
  • Providing access to quality early learning opportunities
  • Supporting high quality childcare providers through workforce development & promoting enrollment in the Texas Rising Star program

SSHC Coalition Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month from 11:30am-1pm,

at The Village Main (215 S. Reimer Avenue, San Marcos)
