Using Hormonal Methods of Birth Control WITHOUT Having a Physical Exam

Community Health Services (CHS) is now offering birth control pills, Depo Provera® injections to women without requiring that you have a complete physical exam first. You may also get a prescription for the patch (Ortho Evra) or the vaginal ring (Nuva
ring). This is available if you do not have:

risk factors for taking hormones

symptoms of cancer of the reproductive organs

cancer of the breast or reproductive organs

How is this Different?

CHS used to require that you have a complete exam and several tests before you started these methods of birth control. CHS now offers hormonal methods of birth control without first having a physical exam.

What Changed?

Many medical experts agree that these birth control methods are so safe that the full exam is not needed to start this birth control method. You will need to have your blood pressure checked and a short history will be taken. This should identify any risks you may have that are related to these methods. You will also be given detailed information about the birth control method you choose.

When and Why is an Exam Needed?

Having an annual exam is VERY IMPORTANT and strongly recommended for general heath screening. The physical exam screens for:

Early signs of cancer of the cervix. A pap smear once a year or as advised by your health care provider could save your life.

Early signs of breast cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends monthly self breast exams, yearly clinical breast exams and a yearly mammogram beginning at age 40.

Sexually transmitted infections. Many people do not have any symptoms of infection. Long term effects of STIs can be serious and can even cause sterility.

If you choose not to have an exam today, CHS recommends you schedule a full examination. It will help you stay healthy, preserve your ability to have children when you want them and possibly save your life by detecting cancer or precancerous
conditions early.
