Head Start believes that children learn best in an environment that includes children of varying ability levels. For this reason at least 10% of the children enrolled in Head Start are children with disabilities. Head Start staff work closely with local school districts and agencies who work with children with disabilities to recruit children with disabilities for our program.
Once enrolled in Head Start, the teachers get information from the child's therapist at the school district or Early Childhood Intervention agency in order to plan a program that is individualized for the child's needs and abilities. Additionally, all children who enroll in Head Start are screened to ensure they are developing according to their age expectations. When a screening indicates the possibility of a delay, the child is referred to the local school district or Early Childhood Intervention agency for further evaluation. Sometimes these referrals result in the child being accepted for services. The Disabilities Coordinator for Head start is available to talk with parents about their child's progress as well as their rights as the parent of a child with a disability. |
